Strategy vs. Tactics A Simple Definition
Strategy vs. Tactics A Simple Definition Many times people confuse strategy and tactics and use one word to mean the other and vice versa. To make the matters worse, a good number of small business owners do not spend enough time planning how they are going to succeed in business. © Shutterstock.com | OllyyA big chunk of their time is spent in running the business. As a result, strategies and tactics are just words used to mean an overall plan. Letâs take a look at the real meaning behind each of these words and find out if they can be used to help improve business.WHAT IS STRATEGY REALLYStrategy can be defined as the plan of action that seeks to achieve an overall goal. It defines the approach that will be taken in achieving this specific goal. In simple terms, a strategy shows what you are trying to accomplish as a company and can be considered as the general direction that you intend to take with the goal.Businesses normally have to deal with five types of strategy. Letâs discuss each of them and how they help in moving the business forward.Product StrategyIn every industry there is competition. To survive, companies have to ensure that their products and services are appealing to the consumers despite the wide range of options available in the market. This means that they have to regularly produce new products that are better than what is available in a bid to attract consumers to buy them. The product strategy is what is used here. An example is Microsoft and Apple. Both companies make money from the sale of software, but each one has its own different product strategy.Microsoft works with computer manufacturers to design computers around their operating system and even sell some of them with this operating system preinstalled. After consumers buy the computers, Microsoft then sells them software to run on the operating system.Apple on the other hand makes its own brand of computers and they all come with Appleâs operating system.Operational StrategyThis one covers the overall operation of the business. The primary goal is to come up with a plan that enables the business to maximize profits while minimizing operational costs. It could involve outsourcing some operations to avoid paying benefits to many employees, moving facili ties closer to consumers to reduce shipping charges, choosing a more affordable working environment or a combination of two or more of these solutions.Pricing StrategyThis one is about the different pricing points that you can sell your product at to emerge at the top of your industry. Itâs important to note that this does not necessarily mean selling at the lowest price in your industry like many businesses do.There are businesses whose pricing strategy involves selling at higher prices because they have been able to convince buyers that the products come with a higher quality. Another pricing strategy would be offering a service as a paid membership over a period of time instead of a one-time payment.Learn about the 3 pricing strategies you should know. Marketing StrategyThis one defines the overall marketing goal that the company will be trying to achieve. The goal here is to come up with a method that works for the companyâs products, and the customers they are trying to att ract. Depending on the customersâ demographic and their unique needs, companies will need to apply different marketing approaches to market their products.Once again, letâs look at Microsoft and Apple. Microsoft focused their marketing on business tools like spreadsheet, database and email applications. Apple on the other hand was primarily concerned with graphic designers and people who produced graphic media. Unlike Microsoft that sought to maximize productivity, Apple was after enhancing creativity. They donated products to schools to ensure that children learned computing using Apple products, hence they were comfortable on the platform which means that it was difficult for them to take up a different platform later.Financial StrategyEverybody constantly has more needs than the resources available. The same applies to business hence they have to come up with a strategy to make the best use of the available resources no matter how limited they are.It may involve borrowing mone y, managing accounts receivable or even finding investors for different projects within the business. It could also involve a combination of the above.DIFFERENCE BETWEEN STRATEGY AND TACTICSNow that we know what a strategy is, letâs take a look at tactics. Tactics follow after you have defined your strategy. No business has all the resources necessary to operate optimally. This means that decisions will have to be made on what gets priority at any given time. This is where tactics come into play. They define how the business is going to prioritize different milestones in carrying out a specific strategy.Unlike the strategy that is usually general, tactics are more detailed on the ways that the business will carry out the plan. This means that the specific actions that will be taken in implementing the strategy. You can employ several tactics involving a number of departments and individuals as part of a common strategy. While both of these words in a broad way are used to mean the way things are done, there is a clear distinction between the two. In the business world, strategy is generally used to refer to bigger plans that will be used to reach a goal while tactics are more detailed in telling how the plan is going to be implemented.Letâs look at an example. Say a company has just started producing snowmobiles. The overall strategy might be increasing availability and awareness about their snowmobiles and their features to consumers internationally. One tactic would be a partnership with a motoring show like Top Gear to do an episode highlighting what these snowmobiles can do. Another one would be sponsoring a team in specific snowmobile races every year and having them use the companyâs snowmobiles. BENEFITS OF STRATEGIC PLANNINGSomebody once said that if you donât know where you are headed, any road you take will get you there. A good business strategy ensures that you donât fall in this mess by providing you with a clear vision of where you are go ing. With this, it is easy to track the progress that you have achieved at any one time so that you can make any necessary adjustments to get back on track if find that you have gone astray.Letâs look at benefits that you will get by having a strategic planning tradition in your business.Establish your companyâs directionStrategic planning gives your company a uniform vision and goal that is shared by all members. It clearly defines the reason for the companyâs existence and ensures that realistic goals are in place to achieve the companyâs mission. This means that it will be possible to measure progress and identify and reward any productive efforts made by employees.Give you controlThere are companies that are proactive and others that are reactive. The reactive ones allow things to happen to them and then they react to the occurrences. Proactive companies on the other hand are the ones that make things happen.A good will-implemented strategy will make a company proactive, h ence it will be one step ahead of the rest.Better understanding of the companyâs positionAny given business needs to understand its position in respect to its goals if it is going to make any progress. A strategy enables the management to better understand its current standing so that they can work out how best to get to the desired destination. This also means that employees have more commitment to the organizationâs goals.Identification of new opportunitiesRegular reviewing of the business strategy requires a lot of creative thinking. This is because of the need to come up with solutions to new challenges that could have come up affecting the implementation of the original strategy. As you try to find solutions to these problems, itâs common to find new ideas and opportunities that you can take advantage of to diversify your companyâs portfolio.Improved business performanceBusinesses that have a strategy have better understanding of what they are trying to achieve both in t he short and long term. This means progress can be tracked easily and as a result, itâs easier to plan to consistently move forward. With a strategy, you will be focused hence chances of being distracted by other seemingly good opportunities are minimal. The result is better results that are delivered faster.Promotes good communication within the organizationIn order to arrive at a specific strategy for the organization, company executives have to weigh the options and evaluate the different approaches that the company can possibly take. This is usually done in a series of discussions and debates where several people sit and talk about the direction that the company should take. Once a strategy has been formulated, there will still be regular sessions to track the progress and make any necessary changes. As a result of these discussions, managers and executives develop good communication skills that ensure that a good flow of information in the company. Better coordination within the companySince the companyâs priorities are clearly set, all departments will have to work towards achieving the same common goals. With this in place, departments tend to forge better working relationships because every one of them understands its duty towards the achievement of the companyâs overall goal.Faster and better decision-makingA good strategy makes managing a company easier because there are clearly defined goals that provide guidance for decision makers. Instead of making decisions that they think will be good for the company from their own judgments, decision-makers will have an end in mind when making the decisions. As a result, they will pick the best way to achieve the end.FORMULATING GOOD TACTICS FOR YOUR COMPANY STRATEGYTactics can make or break a company and its goals. With that in mind, it is important to ensure that you exercise caution when choosing the tactics to work with. This calls for tactical planning, which involves taking the companyâs strategic pl an and coming up with detailed action plans that usually define how the company will achieve smaller milestones usually divided by department.A companyâs tactics are implemented for the most part by lower level managers. Executives come up with the strategic plan, then the lower level managers formulate and implement the tactics. These managers are better placed for this because they have a better understanding of the companyâs day-to-day activities as opposed to executives who only have a birdâs eye view of the company. The following are the four main characteristics of a successful tactical plan:Flexibility. In the business world unanticipated events are unavoidable. As such, successful tactical plans are those that are flexible enough to accommodate and unexpected occurrences. When such an event occurs, will you go back to the drawing board or will you adjust the plan to cater for the change? It should be measurable. Once the plan is in place, are there ways to track its adop tion? Good tactical plans have quantifiable ways of monitoring progress. An example would be choosing a shipping company instead of having an internal shipping department. This tactic is good because it is measurable. Itâs possible to tell the percentage of shipments that arrive on time and those that donât. Itâs also possible to establish the costs incurred.Timing. Tactical plans should not just be vehicles for securing a budget. In reality, these plans are the road map that you will use to implement your strategy. They should have a timing by which the goals should have been achieved. Donât be a victim of Parkinsonâs Law. Your results will also take the length of time allotted to them. If you donât have a specific timeline for each milestone, donât be surprised when it takes longer. Make this law work for you by giving each milestone just enough time.Insight. A good tactical plan should be rooted in true insight. You need to be sure that you develop insights based on industry facts. You need to know what your customers feel about whatever you are seeking to achieve in your goals before you can decide on the path to follow.REASONS WHY SOME TACTICS AND STRATEGIES FAILHaving mentioned the importance of having strategies and tactics in your business, letâs finish with the common reasons why some fail.Partial commitment. Having a strategy so that you can look devoted is likely to end in chaos. The strategy and all the tactics in it need to have full support of the management to be able to produce tangible results. If you donât intend to give the plan full support, then there is no need to spend time formulating it.Resistance to change. If you decide to come up with a company strategy, then you need to be ready to embrace any changes that may be required to implement it. If you formulate a strategy but still want to do things the old way, then be prepared for terrible results on the implementation.Impatience. No matter how desperate we are, execu tion will usually take time. With this in mind, itâs wise to allow your plans some time before you can see any results. This doesnât mean that you should not measure your progress. Measuring is recommended, the problem comes when you expect results overnight.Expecting different results from same actions. When formulating a business strategy, many businesses choose the easy route of doing what every other competitor is doing and expecting to be the best. To formulate a good strategy, you will need to take a step back and examine the entire value chain and tailor it in a manner that gives you a competitive edge.Lack of proper enforcement. Once a strategy has been formulated, resources should be committed and the plan enforced accordingly. This is to mean that there should be consequences for anybody who chooses to take a different approach. On that note, itâs also important to note that enforcement without review could potentially lead the business to trouble. Itâs vital to en sure constant review of the strategy to ensure that adjustments are made where necessary.Your strategy and tactics are critical in the success of every business. Despite the fact that there are a good number of businesses that operate without them, you will need to prioritize them for faster results. Strategic and tactical planning is similar having to satellite navigation when you are on a road trip. While you may eventually get to the destination without it, the trip will be faster, cheaper and easier if you choose to use GPS navigation.

Samsung Review Essay - 977 Words
1- Samsung Review In an effort to review Samsung ln32b360, I found several points that are very good about the product. It has one of the best picture qualities I have ever seen - the only better quality comes from being there in person. Externally it is stylish with a black frame that fits in extremely well with my black, white and chrome decor in the family room. The attractive oval stand swivels to make the screen easy to view from any part of the room, and the keys and buttons on the remote control are different colors and sizes for ease of use. 2- Review of Samsung Shopping for a new television can be a headache, especially with all the new technology and innovations. I read a review Samsung ln32b360 that was raving about how goodâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦It was easy to set up, and I had no problems hooking up my Sony Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 since I am a big gamer. The pictures and graphics were colorful, bright and crystal clear. I am extremely happy with the purchase, and if I had to do it all over again, I would make the same choice. At some point I will finish furnishing the apartment, but for the time being I am much too entertained by the Samsung to do much shopping. I will get around to it one of these days. 5- Wall Mounted Samsung After studying and researching all the brands on the market, we decided to buy the Samsung ln32b360 32. The color was excellent and far superior to the other brands we looked at. There was no need to adjust the settings of the contrast and color tones on the Samsung, whereas the other models needed some changes. It opened up a lot of free space in the den that used to be occupied by our old 25 inch television and its stand. We mounted the Samsung on the wall where it is completely out of the way of the living area. 6- Samsung Game Mode When it came to LCD televisions, the Samsung ln32b360 32 had everything I wanted at a price I could afford. After I got it out of the box I found that it was very easy to set up, and in no time at all I was watching a spectacular picture. The Potential Benefits Of Multigenerational Households
1. There are many potential benefits of multigenerational households, such as easy access to trusted babysitters, higher quality housing, higher perceived social support and economic advancement. Kolker (2011) describes multigenerational households as having the ability to extend our education and combine wages per household in order to reach lofty economic goals such as owning a home. Living with extended family members can also boost social cohesion and support through increasing one on one adult interaction. Multigenerational households offer developmental rewards, more advanced cognitive function, greater resilience from trauma and increase social interactions (Kolker, 109). All of these benefits have the potential to positively affect health and perceived levels of stress. Another potential benefit is parental development which can positively affect parentââ¬â¢s responsiveness to a childââ¬â¢s needs. Children can benefit from more adults in the household to offer guidance, support, and companionship. The text also states that, ââ¬Å"Living with extended family could be a survival tool that which is common among struggling immigrant familiesâ⬠(Kolker, 105). 2. I would personally not want to live in a multigenerational household for many different reasons. My primary reason is because my family does not get along very well. Cosmo Panetta did just that in 1958, leaving his homeland of Greece. Since his move to Canada, Panetta has opened two successful businesses, a variety store and a drive-in/take-out restaurant. Panetta now has several business opportunities to take a popular menu item, the Cosmobob, to the mass-market. Panetta has some important decisions to make on the future of his family business. His options are to grow his company by opening a third drive-in/take-out restaurant, manufacture and market the Cosmobob to the food service industry, manufacture and market the Cosmobob to the retail industry, or not grow at all. Panetta and his family settled in Niagara Falls, Canada in 1958. In 1968, Panetta seized the opportunity to own his own business and purchased a small variety store which was sold to a convenience chain in 1975. In 1979, Panetta expanded his business with the purchase of a second drive-in restaurant on Thorold Stone Road, a main industrial thoroughfare in Niagara Falls. Niagara Falls area attracts over 13. 4 billion visitors each year adding to the customer base of an area with over 79,000 year round residents. Panetta credited his success to three things, a good location, high quality product, and a fair price.Cosmoââ¬â¢s Drive-In was incorporated in 1979. Cosmoââ¬â¢s Drive-In offered a limited menu selection to preserve efficiency and quality. Although other drive-in/take-out restaurants were diversifying their menu options with many specialty products, Panetta only added one, the Cosmobob. The Cosmobob is a pork-based souvlaki or shish kabob, which Panetta developed in 1979. Panettaââ¬â¢s Cosmobob was small cubes of seasoned pork mounted on a bamboo skewer and served with Cosmobob sauce. Panetta wanted his product to stand apart from other lower quality souvlaki on the market and therefore named his product the Cosmobob.Panetta had two potential options for a new facility. One was an old mushroom factory located in Grimsby, Ontario that would require $100,000 to $120,000 in improvements to bring the facility up to provincial health standards. The second was an old dairy plant in Niagara Falls that would only require $30,000 to bring the facility up to provincial health standards. To bring either facility up to par to pass federal government inspections would cost an additional $30,000 to $40,000 along with an additional $80,000 for equipment.Total rent for the first three years for old mushroom factory would total $83,300 and for the old dairy plant would be $103,200 a significant difference of $19,900 more. However, due to the lower cost of upgrading needed at the old dairy plant made it a more feasible choice between the two. Renting the old dairy plant, which is located in Niagara Falls, would also mean Panetta could maintain his current staff that were already trained and ready to go. In February 1999, Panetta was approached by a commercial developer looking for a fast food restaurant to locate into his new mall.Rent would be $1600 a month with an annual rent increase of inflation plus one percent. Rent for the first three years would total $59,384. Panetta would also need to spend approximately $60,000 for improvements and equipment. An average of 500 cars would visit the mall and Panetta felt that it would do about 60 percent of the Thorold Stone Road sales, matching it within two years. Panetta also consider entering the food service market on a provincial or national scale. This would require him to employ a salesperson at $40,000 per year (salary plus expenses) or a food wholesaler, who would require a 20 percent margin on the purchase price.A salesperson would have to sell 2742 cases to match the breakeven point through a food wholesaler who sold the same amount of cases. For Panetta each case sold by the salesperson after the 2742 cases would provide a profit of $17. 76 per case but if sold by a food wholesaler would provide only a profit of $14. 59 per case. If Panetta could sell 600 cases per month in the local market, a salesperson should be able to sell much more than that if taken to the provincial or national market. The other option Panetta has to consider is the retail market. The retail market is highly competitive industry and expensive to introduce a new product to the retail stores. With a typical retail store carrying about 15,000 items, shelf space is at a premium and the retail stores required $20,000 placement fee per supermarket chain. In addition, they would require price discounts, samples, free food allowances, and cooperative advertising just to get new product acceptance. Trade promotions could run as high as 15 percent of manufacturerââ¬â¢s selling price and consumer promotions could easily exceed $500,000 the first year.Along with good promotional support and guaranteed deliveries, supermarket chains would require a 25 percent margin on retail selling price. Panetta already has two successful restaurants being run by himself and his son Joe. Although the start-up cost and rent is a lot cheaper, an additional restaurant location would become a major burden on both Panetta and his son Joe to manage. The retail market has the most potential for profit in the long run, however due to the high cost of start-up in major supermarket chains along with all the additional placement fees, promotional fees, etc.

How to Make Powdered Olive Oil
How to Make Powdered Olive Oil Molecular gastronomy applies science to put a modern spin on traditional foods. For this simple recipe, combine maltodextrin powder with olive oil or any other flavorful oil or melted fat to make a powdered oil. Maltodextrin is a carbohydrate powder derived from starch that dissolves the instant it hits your mouth. It melts away, with no gritty or powdery sensation, so you taste the oil. Ingredients maltodextrinolive oil Food-grade maltodextrin is sold under many names, includingà N-Zorbit M, Tapioca Maltodextrin, Maltosec, and Malto. While tapioca maltodextrin is one of the common types, the polysaccharide is made from other starches, such as corn starch, potato starch, or wheat starch. Use any flavorful oil. Good choices are olive oil, peanut oil, and sesame oil.à You can season the oil or use flavored renderedà fat, such as from bacon or sausage. One way to season the oil is to heat it in a pan with seasonings, such as garlic and spices.à Expect deeply colored oils to color the resulting powder.à Another option is to combine maltodextrinà with other fatty products, such as peanut butter. The only rule is to mix it with a lipid, not water or a high-moisture ingredient. Make Olive Oil Powder This is extremely simple. Essentially all you do is whisk together maltodextrin and oil or combine them in a food processor. If you dont have a whisk, you can use a fork or spoon. For a powder, youll want about 45-65% powder (by weight), so a good starting point (if you dont want to measure) is to go half and half with the oil and maltodextrin. Another method is to slowly stir oil into the powder, stopping when you have reached your desired consistency.à If you do want to measure ingredients, here is a simple recipe: 4 grams powdered maltodextrin10 grams extra virgin olive oil For a fine powder, you can use a sifter or push the powder through a strainer.à You can plate the powdered olive oil by serving it in a decorative spoon or topping dry foods, such as crackers. Dont put the powder in contact with a water-containing ingredient or it will liquefy. Storing Oil Powder The powder should be good about a day at room temperature or several days, sealed and refrigerated. Be sure to keep the powder away from moisture or high humidity. Powdered Alcohol Aside from offering the possibility to serve familiar food in new ways, one big advantage of using the dextrin is that it lets you turn a liquid into a solid. A similar process is used to make powdered alcohol. The difference is the chemicalà used. Powdered alcohol is made by combining alcohol with cyclodextrin rather than maltodextrin. Cyclodextrin can be combined with up to 60% alcohol. If you want to make powdered alcohol yourself, keep in mind you need to use pure alcohol, not an aqueous solution. Cyclodextrin, like maltodextrin, readily dissolves in water.à Another use of cyclodextrin is as an odor-absorber. It is the active ingredient in Febreze.

English 32 world literature Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
English 32 world literature - Essay Example The diary is in fact a criticism of the traditional authoritarian ways of society. First of all, the narrator repeatedly mentions that parents pass on their tradition to their children and that this tradition is evil. In Part II, he notices that the children are looking at him with a certain kind of hatred. Now, since these children were not there twenty years ago when he committed a mistake with ââ¬Å"Mr. Ku Chiuââ¬â¢s account sheetsâ⬠(Lu Xun II), he concluded that ââ¬Å"they must have learned this [mistake] from their parents!â⬠(Lu Xun II). That is why they seem to look at him with contempt and hatred. It seems then that the parents of these children must have taught them how to hate and insult others. Through this particular line, the narrator also implies that, in the place where he lives, parents teach the wrong values and practices to their children, like how to insult and criticize other people. He also mentions the same thing in Part VIII when he argues with a twenty-year-old man about the rightness of eating human flesh. Towards the end o f their conversation, he says perhaps with disappointment and fear, ââ¬Å"[The young man] must have been taught by his parents [and] I am afraid he has already taught his sonâ⬠(Lu Xun VIII). Through this line, he implies once more that the people in his place always pass on the wrong values and practices to their children, such as the idea that cannibalism is right. Finally, he also uses this line to affirm the reason he has stated earlier on why the children look at him: ââ¬Å"That is why even the children [in Part II] look at me so fiercelyâ⬠(Lu Xun VIII). From this line he implies that perhaps all the children in his village have the same fate as the young manââ¬â¢s son ââ¬â the fate that they are destined to follow the evil of their parents. Another proof that the diary is about a condemnation

Personal Marketing Plan Personal Essay
Introduction Upon completion of my undergraduate degree in Aviation Management, I will pursue a career with a major airline. Not only will I realize a life long dream but also it will be a personal accomplishment in an academic road that was often complicated. Ideals may change, values do not and some things just take a little more time to achieve. Situation Analysis *Significant Life Events Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Arizona solidified my passion for a career in aviation. Ivy League it isnââ¬â¢t but it can be classified as the Harvard of the Skies for all practical purposes. That letter of acceptance provided me the validation I needed and the assurance that those with aviation expertise thought I ââ¬Å"had what it tookâ⬠. For the next three years I lived with people that shared the same aviation zest and passion that I do, the drive to succeed, to be the best that you can but learned that your attitude is what will get you places and skills can always be learned. When I was in middle school I underwent surgery for a ââ¬Å"suspicious tumorâ⬠that had developed on my arm. Although day surgery provided me an opportunity to miss school for the day and a few days of sympathy from my family it wasnââ¬â¢t until my follow up visit with the surgeon that I realized the seriousness of the situation. When Dr. Coletta asked me if I had any concerns now that he had removed the ââ¬Å"massâ⬠I expressed my disappointment with the scar heââ¬â¢d left. Politely he answered that I at least had an arm toà be scarred because he truly felt that the mass was malignant and amputation was a consideration preoperatively. How inconsequential a scar was when faced with the loss of a limb. What is that saying about not sweating theà small stuff? I was born on August 15, 1978 and my grandfather died August 15, 1975. Although this happened 3 years before my birth it was an event that has held significance for me none the less. ââ¬Å"VaVooâ⬠was an immigrant and working class who labored 12 hour days in road construction so his children could have a better life. Though uneducated he believed in a college education, doing the best you could for anyone that employed you and strong values. I have cherished his qualities my entire life. *Accomplishments Earning a varsity letter for high school track taught me the value of team work and tolerance. Certainly there was personal accomplishment in my individual achievements but I opened myself up to a whole new range of rewards that I had never given much credence to before. It gave me a new outlook on the value of how much more we could accomplish as a group and the true recognition was in our schoolââ¬â¢s accomplishments and not Kevin Osbornââ¬â¢s. On Friday, November 13, 1998 I attained my private pilotââ¬â¢s certificate, another of lifeââ¬â¢s milestones. Every day at Embry Riddle I worked harder to advance my goal no matter how small it was. I had set my expectations high and with perseverance and hard work I realized personal success. I received the Presidential Award for Innovation as an instructor for College Success 101. This all started as an opportunity to earn some extra money before the term started and anà inflated ego that convinced me that it was a ââ¬Å"no brainerâ⬠. After all, how difficult can it be to teach 20 new freshmen? My budget was lean and I looked through a new lens to view challenging situations, problems and tasks. I created an environment and style that invited participation from my students and a culture in which fun and humor were part of the normal dayà and we all learned something when the final bell rang. *Dissapointments In my junior year at Embry Riddle I became ill and was forced to adjust my career path and my life. Flying jumbo jets wasnââ¬â¢t going to happen, I needed to come home to Florida to be closer to my support systems and eventually enroll in another university to complete my education. I learned how fragile life really is and that we really donââ¬â¢t know what life has in store for us. We can plan and prepare but when faced with change we have to make the best of things and move along. The past is gone forever and my life is today and now. *Interest Inventory MostLeast ManagingWriting AdministratingSelling ExploringFinance Innovating Training Counseling *Strengths Osborn 4 Professionalism Strong interpersonal communication skills and courtesy Adaptability to change Driven to succeed Positive attitude and motivation Self management Strong values Perform at my highest level and do my best. Team work Tolerance Perseverance and hard work Goal oriented Innovation *Weaknesses Financial aptitude Writing Selling products, cross selling *Opportunities Although the airline industry is in the business to transport people from oneà place to another they could not function without those who keep the airplanes operating on schedule. The airline industry has become the major provider of public transportation for Americans traveling between the nationââ¬â¢s cities. Scheduled airlines now account for 92%à of public passenger intercity travel. The outlook for the airline industry is good and continued growth is likely. Airline jobs are located in every city that airlines serve and even in a few they do not serve. Of course, the larger the city, the greater the variety of job opportunities. Morale is generally high among employees and jobs with the airlines carries an aura of prestige and reflects the vitality of technological progress. A non-flight opportunity of interest is that of a flight dispatcher. In cooperation with the pilot, the dispatcher furnishes a flight plan that enables the aircraft to arrive at its destination on schedule with its maximum payload and the least operating cost. The flight dispatcher considers en route and destination weather, winds aloft, alternate destinations, fuel required, altitudes and traffic flow. The dispatcherââ¬â¢s signature, along with that of the pilot, releases the aircraft for flight. The dispatcher must be familiar with navigation facilities over airline routes and must ride periodically in the cockpit with the crew to observe routes, conditions and airports (avjobs.com). *Threats The deregulation of the airline industry, which began in the mid 1970ââ¬â¢s, greatly changed the ways the airlines operated. Overall the result has been an expansion of the airline industry and a surge in hiring in most job categories. However, there is a down side: the industry has become less stable. Airlines have merged; others have gone out of business entirely, causing a dislocation of employees. ââ¬Å"The economic health of the airlines,à however, is directly related to the economic strength of the country as a whole, as well as to outside influences such as the cost of fuelâ⬠(Freiberg 72). Objective Ten years into my career in aviation I hope to be an airline manager with British Airways at Heathrow Airport. My duties will be administrative dealing with station operations, passenger aspects, ground service, equipment, fueling and all facets of running the station. Other responsibilities will include reviewing operating statistics from the previous day, budget items, and meetings to discuss operational issues. An airline manager in this environment could command a $70,000 annual salary. Some of the characteristics I posses for success in this type of job relate to motivation and self- management. Number one is goal oriented and secondly is time management. You need to be open minded, capable of analyzing, evaluating and implementing. Since I enjoy a challenge I would welcome promotional opportunities. Target Market An entry level, post graduation position, will probably be that of a station manager for a small airline. Responsibilities will include responsibility for all flight and ground operations such as aircraft handling, passenger services, and air cargo operations. Selling tickets, checking baggage, preparing passengers and manifests, operating teletypes and computer terminals may also be included in the job duties. Aviation industries of interest include the Federal Aviation Administration, Airlines and Airports, all who require skilled professionals an aviation-related field that present career challenges. ââ¬Å"The FAA operates the worldââ¬â¢s biggest and safest aviation system withà responsibility for the licensing and certification of aircraft and pilots, for the security ofà airports, and for the around-the-clock operation of the nationââ¬â¢s air traffic control systemâ⬠(FAA.gov). Airports are gateways to the cities and countries they serve and provide a variety of jobs locally and nationwide contributing billions to the national economy. Although a career with a large international airport would be the most desirous employment with Boca Aviation would be an acceptable entry- level opportunity. The airlines provide job opportunities in every city they serve with the greater variety of job opportunities in the larger cities. ââ¬Å"The largest concentrations of airline career opportunities are in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, Atlanta and Boston: (). Foreign airlines flying into the United States hire Americans to handle their passenger and air cargo business, an opportunity that cannot be overlooked.

Volenti non fit injuria (voluntary assumption of risk) is a common law which indicates if someone places themselves in a danger where harm might result, knowing that some degree of harm may occur, are unable to bring a claim against the other party in tort. Contributory Negligence anothercommonlawthatrepresents thatif a person was injured in part due to their own negligence they contributed to the accident, the injured party would be entitled to collect any damages from another party who supposedly caused the accident. The Neighbor Principle was developed in a famous case of Donoghue v Stevenson [1932] states that you have a duty of care to ensure that you take reasonable care to avoid acts or omissions which you can reasonably foresee would injure your neighbor. The Three Main Cases Cited Are: Oyston v St Patrickà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s College (New South Wales) Dawson v Department of Justice (Victoria) Duffy v Salvation Army (Victoria) Case Summary and Precedent Cases In case one, April 13, 2011 the school St Patrickà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s was held up in court for a breaching the duty of care due to failing to implement it anti-bullying policy or to dealing with the issue, the incident occurred in 2010. Jasmine Oyston is the plaintiff that was bullied within the school premises and St Patrickà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s College (girlà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s school) defendants, Oyston sought out $ 540,000. But the school claims that she failed to notify the school, as they were unaware what was happening. The Primary judge claimed the Oyston desired amount was extremely high, and soon was given $150,000 in compensation. The acts for negligence were personal injury, psychological harm, appellant bullied and harassed by other pupils at high school. In this case the amount rewarded is believed to be reasonable for psychiatric help if it was needed, and may be enough to fund any medical charges. The issues in today society is that one in every four Australian school s tudents are being bullied, these children are three times more likely to show depressive symptoms and are nine times more likely to have suicidal thoughts this also affects them in adulthood. Considering what they could be going through, a higher value is needed to cope with this. St Patricks owed a Duty of Care for Jazmine Oyston also all students safety, and they had Breached the Duty of Care, as a student was not being taken care and was abused multiple times. In the case, Oyston V St Patrickà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s College, the precedent cases cited was Naidu v Nationwide News Pty Ltd. This Judgment date was 21 December 2007, but the whole progression of the case was that Mr. Naidu was experiencing workplace bullying, racially discriminated, threats of violence and sexual assaulted. Nationwide News Pty Ltd was then required to award Mr. Naidu with $1.9 Million and within this case over 50 cases were cited to resolve this issue. These two cases are very similar both the plaintiff w ere constantly being harassed at work/school. In case two, November 2013, Sarah Dawson took Department of Justice to court for work place bullying, Dawson was bullied by a fellow officer who became a manager between the years of 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2006. Later the Department of Justice was ordered to pay $125,000 for pain and suffering; $134,575 for past economic loss and $54,000 for future economic loss in workplace bullying claim, which comes to a total of $313,575. The acts for negligence were breach of duty of care, psychiatric injury, reasonable foreseeability, employee complaint and conduct by another employee. As being bullied at an older age it has a less effect in duration compared to a child being bullied. But as it can cause the victimà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s income to decrease it will be harder to support themselves or family financially, but when it is a student, they donà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢t have any source of income at that point of time. This is why the compensation for adults should be more than a student. There is Duty of Care Owed which is towards the employee just like another business would, the breach was done by the manager in charge. In the Case, Dawson v Department of Justice, there were seven precedent case, one of many was, Caldow v State of Victoria, Margaret Caldow is suffering from Major Depressive Disorder, she claimed her depression is from her employer Ms. Caldow experienced harassment. These two cases are very similar as the employee were being harassed by their manager In case three, 17 June 2013, Mr Duffy was a disability support pensioner, who claimed to injured his left shoulder at the premises occupied by Salvation Army. The injury was caused by a large octagon mirror had a weight exceeding 100 kilograms that detached from a vanity and fell while being unloaded from a truck. During the process of preserving the mirror, it caused his shoulder to dislocate, Duffy was also not being assisted in unloading the cargo and was not originally assigned to do so. Salvation Army admits that they owed a duty of care. Duffy searched out $42,000,000 for pain and suffering, $100,000 for medical needs, $4,000,000 for past loss of earnings and $18,000,000 for future earnings lost, which comes to a large total of $64,100,000. But received $25,000 for pain and suffering and $1,000 for medical expenses, which comes to a total of $26,000. The Salvation Army does owes a Duty of Care just like any other organizations, they had also breached by Duffy injuring his shoulder. The precedent case used was Swain v Waverley Municipal Council (2005), in 1997 Guy Swain dived into a sandbank at Bondi Beach which caused him to become a quadriplegic. The judge and jury of four, believed the Council owed a duty of care to beach attendance because of its responsibility for the beach. The jury claimed negligence on the part of the Council, it also decided that Mr. Swain was partially to blame for the unfortunate accident (Volenti no n fit injuria), reducing the damages awarded to him to $3.75 million. In the events that occurred it is believed that Guy Swain was given an appropriate amount in compensation, as well that he should be aware of the fact that there is a sandbank, and that he is more responsible. In society today people need to be protected by negligence, as people are being more reckless in public and unaware of the disadvantage cost, this can results small injuries to deaths, like in a scenario where there is a driver driving recklessly and hits. Bullying is now major issue in society as one in four Australian school students are being bullied, these children are three times more likely to show depressive symptoms and are nine times more likely to have suicidal thoughts this also affects them in adulthood Case Cited Case Judgment Date Oyston v St Patrickà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s College April, 2011 Dawson v Department of Justice November, 2013 Duffy v Salvation Army June, 2013 Precedent Cases Naidu v Nationwide News Pty Ltd December, 2007 Caldow v State of Victoria Swain v Waverley Municipal Council 2005 Bibliography Negligence.
